Refrigerated Container Drayage
Reefer import and export container transportation with appropriate genset and power planning for the road move — cold-chain and perishable freight moved from terminal to door and back to empty return across our active terminal markets.
Refrigerated Container Drayage
Refrigerated container transportation is operationally different from standard dry container drayage. A reefer carries temperature-sensitive cargo, so the container has to stay powered appropriately during the road move, which brings power requirements and genset planning into the plan alongside the usual terminal timing, delivery coordination and empty return.
Spartanus Cargo Systems, an Independent Agent of Freedom 1 LLC, coordinates the full reefer container cycle. The temperature setpoint itself is owned by the responsible shipper, cargo owner, ocean carrier or equipment provider — Spartanus does not program, repair, maintain, certify or remotely monitor reefer equipment. For the deeper operational detail, see Refrigerated Container Drayage: Gensets & Temperature Control. It complements our container drayage services.
Reefer Import Container Moves
Inbound refrigerated containers are coordinated from terminal release and availability through pickup, power and genset planning where applicable, delivery, and the empty return that closes the cycle.
Because timing pressure is higher on temperature-sensitive freight, terminal windows and free time matter. Terminal rules and free-time periods vary and are confirmed per shipment. See the import container drayage checklist and how demurrage, detention & free time work.
Reefer Export Container Moves
Refrigerated export runs the cycle in reverse, with power planning layered on top.
- Empty reefer positioning to origin
- Shipper loading appointment and window
- Loaded reefer movement with power planning where applicable
- Return to the terminal ahead of the carrier cutoff
Spartanus can coordinate regional reefer export moves where commercially appropriate, planning road timing backward from the cutoff. Terminal receiving and cutoff rules are set by the terminal and carrier and confirmed for the booking.
Genset & Power Planning
A reefer container needs power to run its cooling unit while it is on the road. Where a refrigerated container requires an appropriate genset or power solution for the move, Spartanus coordinates that as part of the transportation plan, alongside chassis and routing.
Spartanus coordinates qualifying refrigerated container transportation where an appropriate genset/power solution is required for the road move. Spartanus does not repair, service, remotely monitor, program or certify reefer or genset equipment, and does not determine or guarantee cargo temperature. Those responsibilities remain with the shipper, cargo owner, ocean carrier or equipment provider.
Perishable & Cold-Chain Freight
Refrigerated containers commonly carry produce, food, beverage and other temperature-sensitive commodities. Spartanus coordinates the transportation of these reefer containers with appropriate power planning; the handling and temperature requirements for the cargo itself remain defined by the responsible party.
Perishable import volume is seasonal in several markets. See Planning for the Perishable Season and the 2026–2027 perishable import season overview.
Regional Refrigerated Container Transportation
Refrigerated containers often need to move well beyond short local drayage. Spartanus supports regional container transportation across its active terminal markets where the equipment, power planning, timing and return requirements make the move operationally appropriate — including lanes that extend hundreds of miles where commercially appropriate.

Refrigerated Container Drayage FAQ
Common questions about reefer container drayage, gensets, markets and regional transportation.
Refrigerated container drayage is the trucking of temperature-controlled ocean and intermodal containers (reefers) between marine terminals, rail ramps, cold storage, warehouses and customer facilities. Unlike a standard dry container, a reefer move has to account for keeping the container powered appropriately throughout the road leg.
Yes. Spartanus Cargo Systems transports refrigerated containers and coordinates qualifying road moves that require an appropriate genset or power solution, across its active terminal markets and subject to shipment requirements, equipment, terminal conditions and capacity.
A genset is a generator unit that supplies power to a refrigerated container's cooling unit while the container is on a chassis for the road move. Where a reefer container requires an appropriate genset or power solution for the move, Spartanus coordinates that as part of the transportation plan.
No. Spartanus does not remotely monitor reefer temperatures, and does not program, repair, maintain or certify reefer or genset equipment. Temperature instructions and setpoints remain with the responsible shipper, cargo owner, ocean carrier or equipment provider. Spartanus coordinates the transportation of the refrigerated container with appropriate power planning.
Yes. Reefer import moves are coordinated end to end: terminal release and availability, pickup, power/genset planning where applicable, delivery, and the empty return that closes the cycle. Terminal rules and free-time windows vary and are confirmed per shipment.
Yes. Reefer export moves generally involve empty positioning, shipper loading, the loaded reefer movement with power planning where applicable, and the return to the terminal ahead of the carrier cutoff. Spartanus can coordinate regional reefer export moves where commercially appropriate.
Yes. Refrigerated containers often require regional moves beyond short local drayage. Spartanus supports regional container transportation across its active terminal markets where the equipment, power planning, timing and return requirements make the move operationally appropriate, and lanes may extend hundreds of miles where commercially appropriate.
Refrigerated container drayage is available across Spartanus's active markets — North Jersey, Philadelphia, Savannah and Gulfport — with Baltimore in a soft-opening phase, subject to shipment requirements, equipment, terminal conditions and capacity. Philadelphia is a particular focus given its refrigerated and perishable import activity.
Helpful details include the terminal or rail ramp, import or export, delivery city/state/ZIP, container size, commodity, the temperature instructions from the responsible party, any known genset/power requirement, the ready date, the cutoff where applicable, the expected volume, and any overweight or hazmat requirements. Additional details may be needed depending on the lane.
Yes, a reefer container can also be overweight or carry hazardous materials. Those requirements must be disclosed up front so the move can be planned appropriately — overweight around route legality, permits and chassis where operationally and legally appropriate, and hazmat where the shipment's requirements are met.
